Past

Upon the world of Iolara the nations of Casyrias and Virannova have always seemed to be at war. The reasons for this was simple they were too different to ever get along for any extended period of time. Casyrais was a technologically advances society, whose people are referred to as scientist and whom believed that the way of the future will be carved by science. While Virannova kept a more medieval society, whose people--called magic-users--believe the way into the future is through magic. Their constant fighting was having an impact upon Iolara, and it was becoming increasing clear that if they didn't make peace that they would destroy their world and themselves in the process. However, they knew that this peace would be next to impossible to achieve. There was too much animosity between the two nations for them to even begin talking about a peace treaty.

It was Virannova whom came up with the solution to this problem. They decided to build a magical wall. They knew this wall would not stand forever, but they hoped that it would stand long enough to smooth out the animosity between the two nations that when the wall did finally come down they could finally begun that peace talk. Most of all, the construction of this wall would give Iolara time to heal. They knew they had to build this wall fast, because there were those whom would protest its construction and do everything within their power to stop it. It was for this reason that some of the scientist found themselves in Virannova and some of the magic-users ended up in Casyrias. They knew they had to finish the wall before anyone whom might protest against it caught wind of its construction and somehow manage to stop it.

They completed the wall, and it stood for several centuries before a hole big enough for someone to slip through. Both sides had been aware of the reasons behind the construction of the wall and were aware of whom stood on each side. They hoped to make their ancestors' dream a reality. They begun to work upon that peace treaty. They knew it was going to be a long process, but they believed they were in a place where peace between their peoples was a possibility. It was around this time that Ries was born. He was the only son of the Chancellor of Casyrias and his wife. He was a sickly child since the moment he was born. No one knew exactly what was wrong with him. They just knew whatever inflicted him left him bed ridden for weeks on end and racked him with pain. Various test were done upon Ries to figure out exactly was wrong, but no matter how many test he took there was no answer to the cause of his illness.

Some begun to look towards a more supernatural explanation. They decided that his illness was divine retribution for the incestuous relationship that his mother had with her brother, and that Ries was a result of this relationship. One of their reasons for believing this was because Ries' mother and uncle were too close for siblings. They say that it was his mother's influence that lead his uncle to become the highest ranking general within their military, and she wouldn't have pushed so hard to help him achieve this position if they weren't sleeping together. Another reason they believed this was because his uncle was too close to him--especially for a maternal uncle. The final reason they claimed Ries' mother and uncle had an unnatural relationship was because Ries looked nothing like his father. Yet, no matter how much evidence they brought forth his father would not believe them. He wouldn't even do a paternity test when they encouraged him to take one. He said he didn't need a test to prove what he already knew to be true.

Growing up Ries spent much of his time locked away from the outside world. His disease made him very fragile, and his father wanted to do everything within his power to prevent one of his episodes from flaring up. He doesn't remember much of his mother because she died in a terrible automobile accident when he was only two years old. He didn't see much of his father as a child. It wasn't because of his illness, but rather because his father was extremely busy with his responsibility as Chancellor. In fact, it wasn't his father whom taught him everything he needed to know about being Chancellor nor the other things that a father was suppose to teach his son, but his uncle--the very same one that people thought was his actual biological father---whom taught him these things. It was his uncle whom would often be found sitting by his bed when one of his episodes occurred. He loved his father and he knew that his father loved him, but it was his uncle he ran to whenever he needed comforting.

When Ries was ten years old the peace talk between Casyrias and Virannova was finally coming to a close. The only thing left to do was for the king of Virannova and Ries' father to sign the peace treaty. An airship was sent to Virannova to escort their king to Alspic the capitol city of Casyrias. However, when they arrived the king said that he was not going to go to Alspic upon their airship. He would instead find his own way to Casyrias' capitol, but their journey to Virannova was not a waste of time. They would be escorting the crowned prince of Virannova---a boy the same age of Ries whom was the pride and joy of his people--to Alspic. The king made it perfectly clear that this escort was a test whose outcome would determine whether or not he signed that peace treaty. If they got his son to Alspic unharmed he would sign it, but if any harm befall upon the prince than he won't only not sign the peace treaty but declare war upon Casyrias.

The government of Casyrias agreed to these terms. After all what harm could befall the child on a government sanction ship. They underestimated the will of those whom wished for war between the two nations. An assassin sneaked on the ship to kill Ries, whom was going to be on the ship until one of his episodes occurred and force to stay in bed. The assassin did not know this because the one whom gave her the target decided not to tell her. In fact, he had known when he decided to give her the job. The truth was the target had always been the crowned prince of Virannova, but the one whom gave the assassin the job knew that she wouldn't have taken it if she knew this. The assassin came very close to completing the job, but the scientist managed to get into the room and pry her off the crowned prince of Virannova's body. However, it was too late the damage was done, and the king of Virannova remained true to his word when news of what happened to his son reached him. He declare war upon Casyrias.

A year later, Ries found his father dead within his study. It was clear from the bullet wound within his head that he had been murdered, but whom had exactly done the deed was a mystery. However, many believed it was a member of Casyrias' Consul whom might have been behind the act. Ries' father and the member of the Consul were often found bitterly disagreeing over countless issues. Yet, there was no concrete evidence that any of them had been responsible for the crime. However, they quickly tried to use this tragedy to their advantage and seize control of Casyrias from Ries. They believed that an eleven year old couldn't rule a country, but they knew they couldn't remove him from the picture. If they tried that might prove their involvement in the murder of the Chancellor. So, instead they decided to make Ries into a puppet. They might have succeeded with their goal if Ries' uncle hadn't walked into the room. He soothe his distraught nephew and helped him take back control of his country. More than that he helped Ries prove that an eleven year old was more capable of ruling a country than believed.

Present

Ten years has passed since Ries' father was found dead, and Ries have exceeded explanation. Many have thought his disease would have killed him by now, but he is still treading along. No one knows how long he has left, and some pressuring him to marry and have at least one child before his illness succeed in putting him six feet under. However, Ries doesn't know if he wants to have children. He is afraid that he will pass whatever is wrong with him to his children, and he doesn't want to condemn anyone to the same suffering he had to endure his entire life. He knows that his people will be fine if he dies without an heir. The next person in the line of succession will be named Chancellor. After all, that what his people had done in the past when a Chancellor died without an heir.

What worries him, however, is the war between his people and the nation of Virannova. It is raging strong, and it is clear that what their ancestors had hoped to stop is coming to pass. Yet, the impending doom of the world isn't why Ries desire peace. He wants peace for peace's sake. He know it will be hard---some say impossible---but he knows anything worth doing always is. He doesn't know if he will see his dream become a reality, but he will fight every day to make it come true and even if he dies before it does perhaps he will play a large part in ensuring peace for those still alive.
